ISIN Issuance and Eligibility services
CDS Solutions is the national numbering agent (NNA) for the issuance of ISIN numbers in Canada. The ISIN Issuance service allows issuers, agents and underwriters to request and purchase an ISIN or a CUSIP® through an online application.

The security types for which ISINs are issued include:

  • Equity or bond market issues
  • National Housing Act securities
  • Strip bonds
  • Money market instruments, or
  • Medium term notes.

This service also makes ISINs eligible within CDS Clearing and Depository Services' CDSX system.

ISIN (International Security Identification Number) is an international code that uniquely identifies securities. It consists of a two-character alphabetical country code specified in ISO 6166, followed by a nine-character alphanumerical security identifier that is assigned by a national security numbering agency, then an ISIN check-digit .

Every CDSX® -eligible security requires an ISIN. Below is an example of the ISIN number format for a common financial instrument.

CUSIP (Committee on Uniform Security Identification Procedures) is a standard system of securities identification and securities description that is used in electronically processing and recording securities transactions in North America.

As a service bureau to the Canadian financial industry, CDS coordinates the assignment of CUSIP numbers and descriptions with Standard & Poor's (S&P). A CUSIP number uniquely identifies a Canadian or American security and its issuer.

CUSIP is a registered trademark of the American Bankers Association.
